Jean Nouvel’s Serpentine Gallery Pavilion
Every year, a different architect is commissioned to produce a temporary structure outside the Serpentine Gallery in Kensington Gardens.
This year it’s the turn of French architect Jean Nouvel.
Nouvel has designed more than 200 buildings across the world but (as the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion brief requires) this will be his first in the UK.
Christian Boltanski: Heartbeat
The Pavilion will host French artist Christian Boltanski’s Heartbeat installation.
Visitors will be asked to make a recording of their heartbeat, which will be added to an archive and stored on the uninhabited island of Ejima, Japan.
Park Nights at Serpentine Gallery
The Pavilion operates as a public space, with a café and a Park Nights programme of public events and talks.
The space attracts up to 250,000 visitors every summer.
Marathon of Maps for the 21st Century
Park Nights culminates in a Marathon event, which has a different theme each year.
Past years have seen an interview marathon, an experiment marathon, a manifesto marathon and a poetry marathon.
This year there will be a Marathon of Maps for the 21st Century, where artists, writers, thinkers and scientists will present maps expressing their experience of the world.
